Today the world is celebrating Sesame Street's 40th anniversary, and we couldn't let the day go by without highlighting this iconic clip that aired on the show in 1977. Here's Buffy breastfeeding Cody, and explaining to Big Bird what nursing's all about.
What I love most about this video is how they show that breastfeeding is a normal part of life, just something that comes with having a baby. And that's what Sesame Street is so great at -- taking issues that are hyped up by the media and easily explaining them in the context of everyday life on the show. They reflect the fact that children don't see the drama in something like breastfeeding a baby, but can understand that it's simply how to make a tiny baby grows big. Sesame Street addresses sometimes controversial issues with such ease that it's hard not to love it.
Sesame Street has always been great at incorporating breastfeeding into the show -- and they've followed suit when they created the nursing rooms at Sesame Place in Langhorne, Pa.
With its anniversary, Sesame Street is launching a new opening sequence and format for the show, which you can read more about on their Web site. The show is the longest-running program in the history of children’s television, has won 122 Emmy Awards, and airs in more than 140 countries.
And if you haven't hit Google yet, they're featuring the Sesame Street gang in their logo, and they've created a whole bunch of other images you can download.
